It’s easy to find a bottle of wine to drink. The world is full of perfectly good juice. The hard part comes when you are looking for real wine from some place…
that’s how Squadra was born.
There is no better way to discover the heart and soul of Italy than to pedal your way through the countryside – experiencing the authenticity of its many regions through crisp breezes, remarkable landscapes and the road shared with warm-hearted locals. Our Squadra, composed of a Master Sommelier, an award-winning Chef and an industry veteran, have been crisscrossing the winding roads of Italy for the past twenty years and, every now and then we get off our bikes and discover something magical…
These are the wines of Squadra.
The first trek for team Squadra takes us on a climb of 3,000 feet looking down at the valley around Alcamo in western Sicily. For those who think Sicily is a flat island in the middle of the Mediterranean, you would be mistaken. Rolling hills, steep climbs, beautiful valleys spilling into the water dot this diverse island. A dream bike ride and a perfect place to find real wine.
The enologist we discover, Vito Lauria, is a master of organic farming and making wines that balance complexity and restraint. For the Squadra Bianco 2014, we chose to utilize the indegenous varietals of Catarato and Grillo. The Squadra Rosso 2014 taps the international varietals of Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot. The 2015 Rosato comes from 100% Nero D’Avola.
The Team Squadra tour makes a turn north to stop in the amazing hills of northern Veneto. Riding past Venice into the twisting hills of the Valdobbiadene we discover hillside after hillside of vines. We stop for a healthy bowl of Il risotto ai frutti di mare and a glass of what we have been searching for: Prosecco.
Sipping on a glass of delicious bubbles crafted by winemaker Paolo Trevisiol, we all smile. Crisp, clean and balanced, mirroring the balance between the ocean and mountains of the Veneto.
